DARIAH-DE (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is an initiative to create a digital research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural studies. For that purpose, DARIAH-DE supports research in the humanities and cultural studies that works with digital methods and procedures with a research infrastructure consisting of four pillars:

  • Teaching
  • Research
  • Research Data
  • Technical components

DARIAH-DE is associated with the vision of creating a space for data-driven research in the humanities and cultural studies in Germany and Europe — a space that is needed in science across all disciplines. Through the collaboration of research institutions and universities with computing centers and libraries, there is a unique opportunity to open up new pathways and possibilities for collaboration and research in the humanities and cultural studies.

Just as research itself continuously evolves, so too do research infrastructures. Digitalization increasingly raises the need in the humanities and cultural studies to explore new paths alongside traditional research routes. This gives rise to new requirements, including for stronger networking — among scholars themselves as well as with computer scientists and information scientists.

DARIAH-DE contributes to the competitiveness and connectivity of the humanities and cultural studies in the digital age through the development of a modern research infrastructure for the humanities and cultural studies, so that the vision of collaborative and data-driven research is realized and new opportunities for collaboration and research are created.

The governance structure of DARIAH-DE consists essentially of three bodies:

  • The DARIAH Steering Committee is the joint central decision-making body of the active DARIAH-DE partners

  • The DARIAH-DE Coordination Office coordinates DARIAH-DE as the national node of DARIAH-ERIC and is located at the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen

  • DARIAH-DE in the association Geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungsinfrastrukturen e.V.: According to the association’s statutes, the “national nodes to European humanities research infrastructures” are coordinated there. The offerings of DARIAH-DE, as the national node of a European humanities research infrastructure, are part of the association’s catalog of offerings and are jointly monitored in the association’s coordination council (cf. § 11 of the association’s statutes).

Trust in digital research infrastructures is the fundamental prerequisite for the use of such infrastructures and also forms the basis for the cultural shift toward the FAIR principles and Open Access. Such trust is substantially strengthened by the factor of sustainability.

CLARIAH-DE, as the merger of the two established research infrastructures CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE, created a sustainable structure for the humanities and cultural studies communities. To this end, a sustainability strategy was formulated that promotes and enhances the further development and networking of humanities and cultural studies research infrastructures in Germany and Europe. To implement this goal, CLARIAH-DE initiated, together with the consortium partners and other interested parties, an association transformation based on the already existing association TextGrid e.V. The legal form of an association has the advantage of enabling the greatest possible participation of the users and providers involved, as well as interdisciplinary and international participation.

Information on the structure of the association and on membership can be found on the website of the association Geistes- und kulturwissenschaftliche Forschungsinfrastrukturen e.V..
